Acupuncture for children / kids

Using acupuncture needles on kids?

Well there is another option! It’s called Shonishin, and it is a form of Paediatric Acupuncture used widely overseas, and is gaining popularity in Australia. Personally, Rebecca has taken her children for treatments and has experienced the benefits in her own home of Paediatric Acupuncture.

In her clinic, Dr. Rebecca Brook BHSc (Acupuncture) uses a variety of techniques including traditional chinese cupping, tapping, rubbing, gentle stimulation and scraping around acupuncture channels (or otherwise known as meridians) to address presenting issues.

Children are very “yang” and stimulation of required acupoints based on a comprehensive TCM diagnosis means kids generally respond quite well.

They are usually very fascinated by the treatment, and involvement is encouraged!

This is a gentle treatment option that can be used in conjunction with western medicine treatment, or as a stand alone treatment.

There are various stages of significance

  • birth to 6/7 months of age

  • being a toddler

  • up to around 12/13 yrs of age

  • 13yrs into adulthood

Shonishin, or non-invasive Paediatric acupuncture is a wonderful support for many common conditions seen during these phases including…

  • colic/reflux

  • bronchial/cough/chest related issues

  • sleep disturbances such as night terrors, inability to go to sleep, waking frequently, bed wetting, fear of going to sleep and much more

  • fevers and being frequently sick

  • muscle aches/growing pains

  • upper respiratory infections/sinus concerns

  • growth or development concerns

  • hyperactivity or being distracted

  • lethargy

If you have an interest in trying this ancient medicine, get in touch for some guidance about your particular circumstances.

There are different characteristics during each stage of development, and whilst receiving a Shonishin treatment, your child will undoubtedly be remarkably curious! They will be in control of the session, and be active participants in their treatment -you’d be surprised just how interested they are!
