Beginners Guide to Acupuncture

If you are new to acupuncture, or an old hat, here’s some guidance about exactly what goes into your treatment.

Initial consults are a must! It gives us that bigger picture we need. Overall health assessments are essential, both for the best treatment outcomes, and legally!

Once I have some of the relevant info I need, I work out what the diagnosis is, through Traditional Chinese Medicine eyes.

This depends on a few things.

Your answers to my questions. Pulse and tongue diagnosis. Possibly some cupping to see what’s happening and to move qi and blood. Maybe some moxibustion (burning the chinese mugwort herb to tonify and nourish you).

Once I have my diagnosis, I work out your treatment in my head, and make notes of what I’m going to do on your medical notes.

Then we begin!

Step 1 is getting you on the treatment table.

Step 2 is starting treatment eg cupping, guasha, moxa, or just jumping straight into acupuncture.

Step 3 is letting you rest. Time to switch off, not feel like you have to talk, and to have about 15-20mins to rest deeply. This is the time your body awakens to the messages from the acupoints. What we ask of your body in this time needs to be allowed to be heard. So this peaceful time is all yours!

At the end of your session I will remove the acupuncture treatment (pins), allow you time to get up slowly and then we book your next appointment, or discuss what our treatment plan is.

This is a basic guide to how the session flows.
